Take away your cell phone for 1 day....

advertisement

What if you took away your cell phone for 1 day?

I think back, way back, when I remember watching LL Cool J on his, I need love video. Remember the mobile phone that he flaunted? It was the size of a tennis racket. Or the old sitcom of the rich guy in an old mercedes with the car phone. It makes me think of how far we've come. Today, the cell phones are the size of credit cards. They go everywere with us. Nowadays, the cell phone is just as important as your car keys or your wallet. "Don't leave home without it." The fear of being without your cell phone creates anxiety and stress. It's called Nomophobia. Careless use of the cell phone in vehicles has caused tradegy to so many, yet it has been critical in life saving circumstances across the world. I seeded an article regarding cell phone usage in vehicles. http://insuranceconsult08.newsvine.com/_news/2008/03/22/1383882-drinking-an-driving-chatting-and-texting-any-difference

So, what if you took away your cell phone for 1 day?

Would you go crazy? Would you find peace? Would you lose your job? or would would you be able to find one?
Would your world cease to exist as you know it?
And finally, do you consider yourself a nomophobe?

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I won't say that I don't feel "connected" to my mobile phone, but I recently shut down the Blackberry in favor of a smaller, lighter cell phone. On two occasions receiving e-mail on the thing made me some money. The rest of the time it was a distraction.

That said, if I reach in my pocket and the phone isn't there it's panic time. I guess that makes me a borderline nomophobe. I won't drive home to get it, but I do feel "less connected" to my world.

Sometimes I feel too connected. Meaning, I'm available too much, where things could be resolved later but HAD to be resolved right then because of the easy access to the cell phone. I too think it can be a distraction that can actually cause problems. Self-management is key. Thanks
